SCC Job Description

 

Student Computing Consultant (SCC)

SCCs educate residents on all aspects of network computing at WCU, consult with residents on network computer-related problems and support in-room network connections. Most importantly, SCCs are expected to be available to other residents. SCCs work primarily with the residence hall staff and the Computer Center to accomplish their goals.

The position extends for one full academic year (Fall/Spring) for SCCs beginning in the fall semester.

The following is a list of the various roles an SCC will assume throughout the year:

Network Technician

  • Main responsibility will be to help maintain the resident computer network and notify Client Services of any problems.
  • Help users with basic network software installations.
  • Assist students having problems connecting their computers to the resident computer network.
  • Influence policies for the functioning and security of the resident computer network.

Computer Consultant

  • Available to provide consulting for resident students who own their own computers.

Computer Educator

  • Introduce new students to WCU's computing resources and assist them in acquiring basic network computer skills.
  • Publicize and help educate residents on the computer usage policy.

Developer of Residential Computer Based Projects

  • Works with residence staff and students to help develop and implement various projects such as flyers, newsletters, databases and residence mailing lists.
  • Assist in maintaining the ResNet web site.
  • Assist in development and testing of new ResNet services and support guidelines.

Other Expectations

  • SCCs must arrive to campus about a week early and attend SCC training sessions and to assist students with setting up their computers during move in.
  • SCCs are required to attend regular meetings and to participate in the wcu.resnet news group.
  • Submit status reports of their activities at the end of each month.

Job Qualifications

  • Applicants must have a good balance between technical and interpersonal skills.

Technical skills we look for include:

  • Experience with networking concepts, preferably in a TCP/IP environment.
  • Proficiency with PC and/or Macintosh hardware and applications including word processors, spreadsheets and databases.
  • Familiarity with campus computing resources as well as Internet resources such as news groups, email and the World Wide Web.
  • Experience consulting, teaching or tutoring.
  • The willingness to learn and apply new knowledge and techniques.

Interpersonal skills we look for include:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience helping and teaching others.
  • Experience organizing projects and working in a team environment.
  • A demonstrated interest in contributing to life in the residence halls.

Terms of Employment

  • All current WCU students in good academic standing with at least a 2.25 GPA are welcome to apply for the SCC positions.
  • Candidates who are on academic warning or have less than a 2.25 GPA will not be considered for an SCC position and will be asked to step down if they are placed on academic warning while serving as an SCC.
  • Candidates must have no continuing record of University disciplinary action at the time of application or appointment.
  • Candidates must not have any significant record of University policy violations. If a policy violation takes place while serving as an SCC, the employment status will be reviewed with the Housing professional staff and others involved with the violation.

Other

Job description and duties are subject to change as needed to meet the needs of Western Carolina University.† In general, workload will be greater during the first several weeks of each semester.† Normal hours of work after semester startup will be from 12:00 noon until 12:00 midnight unless an urgent need exists outside this time frame. Hours worked per week will be determined by supervisor depending on workload requirements, budgetary constraints, performance or other related issues. All university guidelines regarding student work requirements will be followed at all times.

Compensation

SCCs will be paid a minimum of $7.00 per hour depending on experience and performance.
